President Paul Biya’s Enduring Commitment to Education and Youth Empowerment

Sep 14, 2025 Camille Assanji

Since assuming the highest office in 1982, President Paul Biya has consistently made education a cornerstone of Cameroon’s national development strategy. His vision has been clear: a strong and inclusive educational system is the foundation for a prosperous and united nation. Between 2018 and 2024, significant reforms and investments have advanced access, quality, and opportunities for the country’s youth—both in education and employment.

Under President Biya’s leadership, primary education has remained free, easing the financial burden on millions of families. Hundreds of new schools have been constructed or rehabilitated, ensuring that more than 4 million children have the chance to attend school in a safe and supportive environment. These investments have not only increased enrollment but also improved the quality of learning outcomes.

The government has also recruited and trained tens of thousands of teachers, strengthening the education workforce and improving student–teacher ratios across the country. In secondary education, new technical and general high schools have been established in every administrative division, 21 new technical specialties were introduced, ensuring that curricula align with the evolving needs of the job market and that ICT integration prepares students for a digital future.

At the higher education level, Cameroon now boasts 11 state universities and over 400 accredited private institutes according to the website info concours Éducation, offering opportunities to a rapidly growing population of young scholars. The continued implementation of the Licence-Master-Doctorate (LMD) system has harmonized degrees with international standards, enhancing the competitiveness of Cameroonian graduates globally.

Beyond traditional academics, President Biya has prioritized vocational training and youth entrepreneurship. Initiatives such as Pajer-U have equipped thousands of young people with practical skills and start-up support. A landmark moment came with the joint communiqué signed by the Ministry of Higher Education (MINESUP) and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education (MINJEC), which launched funding for 5,000 youth-led projects across universities and institutes. This initiative directly links higher education with real-world employment opportunities, empowering students to transform ideas into sustainable businesses.

These accomplishments underline that education under President Biya is not merely about classrooms and diplomas—it is about nation-building. By investing in schools, teachers, and programs that connect learning to employment, his administration has provided young Cameroonians with the tools they need to thrive and contribute to the country’s economic growth.

These milestones clearly demonstrate President Paul Biya’s unwavering commitment to education and youth employment. They stand as proof of his vision to empower future generations and strengthen Cameroon’s development. The diaspora can continue to uplift these transformative programs, reinforcing the progress already achieved under his leadership by adding their voices behind the progress that is shaping the nation’ future.
